(Correspondent Yang Shuhe) In the morning of June 27, GUI Jianfang, a fish geneticist and academician of the Chinese academy of sciences, was invited to the aquaculture lecture in the international academic exchange center of our university and made an academic report entitled ‘Breeding story of series species of Carassius auratus gibelio’.
At the meeting, academician Gui introduced the research and cultivation process of Carassius auratus gibelio and the progress achieved. He won the second prize in China's State Natural Science Award in 1985 and 1995. Since 1995, with the support of The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and other major projects, Gui and his team have revealed the genetic characteristics of Carassius auratus gibelio and the genetic basis of its reproductive mode by means of molecular marker analysis and interbreeding between clones. At the same time, the genetic basis of reproductive mode of Carassius auratus gibelio was systematically studied combining theory with practice. The institute of hydrology, Chinese academy of sciences, created a new clone with parthenogenetic female's nuclear reproductive capacity by using the method of multiple reproduction of Carassius auratus gibelio, through positive and negative interactions between different clone lines. In 2008, a new clone of Carassius auratus gibelio was developed, and it won the second prize in China's State Natural Science Award for the third time in 2011.
In the process of studying the reproductive mode of Carassius auratus gibelio, they also found that spermatogonial insemination could activate the Carassius auratus gibelio, and after cold shock treatment, the chromosome fragments of Carassius auratus gibelio were integrated into the genome, which led to the cultivation of ‘No. 5 of the Chinese family’, said Gui. Using the parthenogenetic reproduction of Carassius auratus gibelio, the individuals who were integrated into the group-head after cold shock treatment were used as the core group of breeding. After 10 generations of female nuclear reproduction breeding, the new breed ‘Zhongke No. 5’ was developed. At the same time, through a series of comparative tests, it was found that ‘Zhongke No. 5’ had the advantages of rapid growth, strong disease resistance and less intermuscular bone quantity compared with ‘Zhongke No.3’. In 2018, a Carassius auratus gibelio ‘Zhongke No. 5’ won the national aquatic new species certificate. In the more than 40 years since 1970, the institute of hydrology of the Chinese academy of sciences has developed five species three generations of scholars, two national labor model three times national second prize and four times provincial first prize through the study of polyploid Carassius auratus gibelio. After the report, academician Gui patiently answered the doubts of the teachers and students present.
Introduction: Gui Jianfang, Chinese fish geneticist, was born in June 1956 in Huangmei, Hubei province. He graduated from Wuhan University, where he received bachelor's and master's degrees in 1982 and 1985. He served two terms as director of the institute of hydrobiology of the Chinese academy of sciences and two terms as director of the national key laboratory of freshwater ecology and biotechnology, and is now a researcher of the institute. He was elected as an academician of the Chinese academy of sciences in 2013 and an academician of the academy of sciences of developing countries in 2015.
Gui Jianfang has long been engaged in research on the biological basis of fish genetics and breeding and related biotechnology. The genetic basis and reproductive mechanism of polyploid Carassius auratus gibelio were studied systematically. The original breeding technological route of Carassius auratus gibelio cultivates new variety of Carassius auratus gibelio with great application value. An X - and Y - chromosome linkage marker - assisted breeding route was developed. As the host, he cultivates a new breed of aquatic species, such as ‘Zhongke 3’ and ‘Zhongke 5’, and as the main partner, cultivates a new variety of aquatic species, such as ‘Quanxiong 1’ and ‘Changfeng Crucian carp’.
Gui has published over 420 research papers in Nature, PNAS, Mol. Biol. Evol. The treatise has been used more than 10000 times. More than 100 doctors and masters have been trained, and more than 100 doctors have been sent out. Among them, 1 doctor has won the special prize of President of the Chinese academy of sciences and 2 excellent prize. The research results obtained more than 10 awards, including 1 second prize (2011) of national natural science award, 1 first prize of science and technology development award of Chinese academy of sciences (2014), 1 first prize of Hubei natural science award (2003), 1 first prize of Hubei science and technology progress award (2011), and 10 patents authorized. I have won nearly 20 honors including national advanced worker, Hubei provincial award for outstanding contribution to science and technology, and He Liang He Li foundation science and technology progress award.
